It’s been a long semester—Fall Break is long gone and Thanksgiving feels like light years away. Maybe midterms came through and single-handedly wrecked your GPA… Maybe you just got dumped in the worst possible way…Or maybe you just need a change in order to make it through to the holidays. My advice: set down that study guide, throw away that self-help book, and make an appointment at one of Arkadelphia’s local hair salons today.

It is no secret that a haircut can work wonders on one’s self-esteem. It is psychologically proven that even the simplest of trims can change someone’s whole perspective on life. Haircuts help us walk a little taller, feel a little fresher and get through even the roughest of weeks.

The city of Arkadelphia offers a variety of salons for students to choose from. One such salon is The Gossip Shop. Located at 922 Main Street in downtown, Arkadelphia, The Gossip Shop is in walking distance from Ouachita’s campus. Established over 15 years ago, the salon offers customers a variety of services, including: men, women, and children’s cuts, coloring, perms, up-dos and makeup.

Pricing ranges from $10 for children and men’s cuts to $15 and up for women, with coloring starting around $50. The salon also has a boutique with clothing for women and little girls.

“This is what I have always wanted to do,” Afton Oelmann, hair stylist at The Gossip Shop, said. “Usually when people are feeling down one of the first things they do is go and get their hair cut and colored. I just love to make customers feel better about themselves.”

“Last semester I had the terrible task of looking for a new hair stylist and was really nervous about finding one,” Marissa Pilcher, junior mass communications and Spanish major from Maumelle, Ark. said. “You have to trust your hair stylist, it’s a special bond. After a couple days of research on Arkadelphia hair salons, I chose Gossip Shop. I scheduled with Afton and after just meeting her I felt relaxed. I knew she would take care of me and my hair.”

Another option available to students is Salon 620, located at 2401 Pine Street next to Fellowship Church. The salon, which has been open 13 years, offers customers the standard men and women’s cuts and coloring, as well as eyebrow and facial waxing and tanning.

Prices range from $15 for men’s cuts, $25 for women’s cuts, $65-$75 for highlights, $55 for all over color and $5-$15 for waxing. The salon also offers 15% off on all walk-in haircuts on Wednesdays until the end of the year.

“Salon 620 is very professional,” Samantha Pascoe, a junior biology and Spanish major said. “It is definitely the cleanest salon in town and the stylists are fun and nice.”

“We would love to have new people in here,” said a Salon 620 stylist. “We always love seeing new faces.”

Other salons in the area include: Hair Hype, Country Hairitage, True Beauty Hair Salon, and Cutting Edge. And for the men, several barbershops include: O K Barber Shop, Deaton’s Barber Shop and Unique Barber SVC.
