Transerve encourages service, records student involvement

September 12, 2010

Transerve is “a program noting service to the community on university transcripts.” Last year, several people graduated with Transerve recorded on their Transcripts. So, why should college students Transerve?
Ouachita’s value of service is one of the foundations of the school. Some students take on this commitment to combat selfcentered tendencies as they go through school while learning the skills to reach their dreams and future careers. Yet others use opportunities provided by Transerve for no other purpose than
to serve.
Ian Cosh, director of the Elrod center and the coordinator of the Transerve program, believes deeply in service programs such
as Transerve. “Programs like Transerve seem to have [a] way to extend the aspect of service throughout a student’s Ouachita experience,” Cosh said. “Transerve allows students volunteer opportunities across the spectrum. This program can definitely be tailored to each student’s schedule and ability.”
One of the requirements for students to complete the Transerve program and have it recorded on their transcripts is doing at least 20 hours of service during a semester. Service opportunities organized by Ouachita include Tiger Serve day, Elder Serve, Backyard Bible Club, and Big Brother/Big Sister. Outside the
campus service activities may include Church sponsored service events, work non-partisan political organizations, and volunteer work at a church.
One question students may have when considering Transerve is: how can this help with my major and plans for the future? Companies today have interests in being good corporate neighbors, so a history of community service can get Transerve students into areas of the community in such areas as through business and service career fields.
Future employers and graduate schools love to see that you were involved in service while getting your education and you have the satisfaction of knowing
you are making a difference in the lives of others, according to www.Tigernet/Transerve.com Yet not all students involved with Transerve do it for the notation on the transcript.
“I don’t do it for my future job; I do it simply to serve,” said junior Glen Bolton. “I really don’t care about it helping me get a job or anything. It’s all about the
[Holy] Spirit leading you to help others. That what’s important.” “One time, I was washing this house and the hose broke. Well, to finish the house, I had to call
some friends out and with a few buckets and sponges, we washed the entire house,” Bolton said.
Transerve, is celebrating 12 years with Ouachita, and has more than 140 students enrolled this semester interested in serving the Arkadelphia community and receiving Transerve hours.
