Ouachita Tiger soccer lost a heartbreaker in the second half of overtime to the Delta State Statesmen on Sunday. Final score was 2-1.
In the first half, the Tigers played premier defense in stopping Delta State’s constant offensive attack. The Statesmen scored the first goal of the match, however, in the 35th minute when Amine Rahmani’s corner kick found Paul Ochnicki, who put the ball in the back of the net. The Tigers went into halftime down by one.
The second half featured a little more offense from the Tigers, in which OBU took six shots. In the 71st minute, Taylor Heinsohn received a pass that put him one-on-one with Delta States’ keeper, Milos Boskovic. Heinsohn was fouled on the play, giving OBU a penalty kick and Boskovic a yellow card. Ouachita’s Nathan Gay scored the penalty kick, tying the game at one.
After 90 minutes of regular time, the match went into two ten-minute halves of golden goal overtime. In the first half, Ouachita Tiger Ryan Trayner unloaded a shot from just outside the box that seemed to be the game-winning goal but sailed just high. The first half of overtime ended still tied 1-1.
In the second overtime, Delta State scored in the 106th minute of play, giving the Statesmen the victory. The goal came from Ochnicki off an assist from Jaxon Lambert.
Seven players received yellow cards during the match, and the teams committed a combined 42 fouls.
Tiger keeper Wayne Smith recorded a match-high nine saves for the Tigers.
The match on Sunday was Ouachita’s Senior Day, in which six Tiger seniors were honored.
AJ Bauckman has played three years with the Tigers after transferring from Eastern New Mexico University. While at OBU AJ has amassed four goals, three assists and eight points. He is a History Major from Irving, Texas.
Jared Carlin has played four years with the Tigers starting 57 of 64 games. Jared has been a team captain during his senior campaign. Carlin is an accounting major from Lubbock, Texas and will be studying for the CPA while working as an auditor in the fall.
Bry Goss has played in 38 games for the Tigers, scoring one goal and adding three assists. Bry will graduate with and Degree in Accounting and one day plans to return to Indonesia, the place where he developed his love for soccer. He is from Amarillo, Texas.
Taylor Heinsohn has played three years for the tigers playing in 37 games and starting 10. Four of Taylors’ six career goals have been game winning goals for the Tigers, he also has three assists. Taylor will be graduating with a degree in Computer Science. He is from Hallsville, Texas.
Wayne Smith has played soccer for Ouachita for all four years of his college career while also double majoring in History and Education. Wayne wants to thank his family, friends, teammates and coaches for their continued support, encouragement and patience. Upon graduation, Wayne will become a certified Social Studies teacher and a qualified soccer coach for the state of Arkansas and plans to return to his hometown of Texarkana to become a high school teacher and soccer coach.
Kevin Tello played two years for the Tigers after transferring in from John Brown University. While at OBU, Kevin has played in nine games before being sidelined with an injury. Kevin will be graduated in May with a Kinesiology/Fitness degree. Kevin is from Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
The Tigers finished the season with a record of 5-9-1.
