Tiger Baseball Outdoes Henderson in Mid-Week Match-up

March 25, 2013

The Ouachita Tiger baseball team crossed Highway 7 on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Henderson State Reddies in a non-conference mid-week match-up. The Tigers used a great defensive performance, coupled with a pair of big innings from the plate to take a 10-0 win over the Reddies (13-8), led by the performance of Tryce Schachlin on the mound.

Ouachita (11-11-1) opened up the scoring in the third inning, when Landon Flax recorded an RBI single that pushed Sean Noland home for the first run of the game. An RBI single from Landon Moore followed, scoring Seth Childers, which Chris Tavares followed with another RBI single, this time scoring Flax.

The fourth inning saw Flax recording his second RBI of the game, as he clocked another single and scored Tyler Faught. The Tigers weren’t able to start another rally, but the run gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead just four innings in.

The sixth inning is when Ouachita really did their damage though. Keegan Ghidotti was walked, forcing home a run and giving him an RBI to notch the first run of the inning, but the Tigers were just getting started. Later in the inning, Tavares knocked a grand slam over the wall, recording four RBIs and giving the Tigers a 9-0 lead.

The last run of the game came in the eighth inning, when Moore recorded an RBI single that scored Childers. The Tigers held Henderson scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, signaling the end of the game due to mercy rule.

Schachlin threw all eight innings, only giving up five hits and recording two strikeouts while holding Henderson State scoreless.

Henderson used a total of six pitchers in the game, but starter Ethan Jones took the loss after giving up four runs in four innings of work.

The Tigers’ performances from the plate were highlighted by Tavares, who finished the game with a 3-of-3 showing, notching five RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

Ouachita returns to the diamond on Friday, when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State for the opener of their three game weekend series. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
