Students were able to enjoy an overnight campout event hosted by Ouachita’s Outdoor Recreation team this past weekend without even leaving campus. The campout, held at Speer Pavilion, gave students the opportunity to not only sleep in tents, but also bond with each other and learn about living in nature.
Over the past semester, new Outdoor Rec director Shane Seaton has hosted a variety of events designed to engage students in physical activity and in their environment.
Senior English major and pscyhology minor Aaron Hill, from Benton, has partaken in Outdoor Rec events this semester, including a previous campout hosted on the property of Drs. Byron and Amy Eubanks. Hill stresses the benefits students can experience from participating in the campouts and other events that Outdoor Rec hosts.
“Spending time in nature recharges the mental batteries,” said Hill. “The sensation of freedom is unparalleled by anything else. Every time I come back from an Outdoor Rec campout, I feel so refreshed and ready to tackle more homework.”
Hill also said that while he enjoyed having a few people to hang out with, he says the more, the merrier.
“We’re always ready to add more people to the community, and it’s a great way to make new friends,” said Hill.
Ouachita students are encouraged to attend Outdoor Rec events. To find out about future Outdoor Rec events, watch your TigerMail or follow the Rec Life Instagram page @obureclife to see what Shane has planned.
