Campus Activities Board’s Spring Fling begins Thursday, April 2. The three-day celebration will consist of several games, events and concerts for students to enjoy.
“Let’s be honest … there’s not that much to do in Arkadelphia,” CAB’s vice-president of public relations Lauren Nelson said. “CAB’s goal is to bring exciting things to OBU to enhance the student’s college experience.”
That is exactly what CAB hopes to do by providing their annual Spring Fling
Thursday’s events include laser tag, dunking booth, speed pitch, jumbo boxing, jousting, bungee run, giant trike racing and other various inflatable games. There will also be food available such as funnel cakes, snow cones, popcorn and Coke floats.
There will be a movie showing in the middle of campus on the lawn titled “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” on Friday, April 3.
Saturday, April 4 will begin with the Elrod Center’s Tiger Serve Day from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Groups can register online at www.obu.edu/serve. After Tiger Serve Day there will be events such as a Frisbee golf competition, horseshoe, a racquet ball competition, an XBOX 360 competition, concerts, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a chili cook-off. Most of these events will take place in the middle of campus.
Everything is free except the T-shirts CAB is currently selling for $10.
CAB is looking for groups or organizations to sign up to man the food stations. All of the events can be sponsored by a group or organization by signing up in the Campus Activities office.
The chili cook-off is a new addition to the Spring Fling, and CAB invites all students and faculty to participate in the event.
“We’ve asked local churches to join in and help cook,” said William Hunsucker, CAB’s vice-president of special events. “We’re trying to raise money to help with the Lighthouse Ministries.”
There will be prizes given for the best chili voted on by judges and the popular vote chosen by the public. The slogan for Spring Fling is that it will be “The most fun!” Nelson coined the phrase for the event.
“It will be the most fun because we have spent a lot of time talking about what OBU students really enjoy doing,” Nelson said. “There will be something for everyone.”
“I think it will be fun because it will provide a weekend of activities in which students can participate, have fun and just relax,” Hunsucker said.
Another addition to the plans for this year’s Spring Fling is the Spring Fling king and queen. By supporting CAB in one way or another, students have been able to put their name or the name of a friend in the raffle for Spring Fling king and queen.
From this raffle, eight names will be drawn and those people will pick a partner of the opposite sex. On Thursday they will compete against the other teams in various competitions and the winners will be named Spring Fling king and queen. Prizes include their own personal couch for the movie Friday night, free snacks and “king” or “queen” monogrammed on the back of a Spring Fling T-shirt.
CAB would like students to know how great this event will be and how well it has been thought out for their enjoyment.
“These events are put in place for the students, with the students in mind, free of charge,” Hunsucker said.
Nelson hopes students will see the effort put in to the event and that it is all about them.
“CAB is here to serve all students so we try to make life here at OBU more enjoyable and Spring Fling is one of the ways we try and do this,” Nelson said. “If you don’t have plans for the weekend you should really try and come and enjoy some free fun. We’ve been working hard on making it great this year so we hope to see you there.”
