Social clubs on campus prepare for fall semester at Ouachita, ready to bring traditions and new events to campus

September 11, 2015

As fall approaches, the presence of social clubs on campus becomes well known. Whether you enjoy tailgating at football games, watching Tiger Tunes or guarding the tiger, social clubs are here to welcome and introduce some of Ouachita’s favorite traditions.

The Women of EEE are a sisterhood that has a campus legacy of 90 years and holds the largest club membership currently. EEE is full of women who wish to serve campus with joyful spirits and with a lot of fun in mind.

“Our activities and time together is what makes our sisterhood so sweet,” said Beth Anne Caery a senior communications science and disorder major and EEE Fall President. “This fall we are gearing up for Tiger Tunes, Tiger Serve Day, intramural sports of all kinds and other fun events such as mixers and date nights. As a club we realize that our time together is what creates the strong bond we all treasure and by hosting events, we hope to share a piece of that with campus.”

“We will be hosting tailgates with food and photo booths, cheering for the Tigers at ballgames and pep rallies, as well as participating in Battle of the Ravine events. Our sisters are so excited to be serving in all areas on campus and have the opportunity to have good time and meet new faces,” Caery added.

The Women of Tri Chi are another great girls’ club of nearly 90 ladies who are passionate about serving and loving others on campus. Tri Chi incorporates several events into their fall calendar that they are excited to share with the rest of the student body each year.

“We are so excited about the upcoming semester and while we are spending the next few weeks practicing for Tiger Tunes, we are also planning a lot of fun things,” said Bonnie Magee, a senior accounting major and Tri Chi’s fall president. “During homecoming week we will be making posters to support the football team in the amphitheater. After that, our newest members will be hosting a dessert auction fundraiser and we are also planning our fall function, which is a big event that we will hold the semester for the whole campus. We are going to round it all out by hosting our first ever philanthropy week.”

One of the more involved clubs on campus is Kappa Chi. The Men of Kappa Chi strive to hold their character to pillars of respect, diversity and brotherhood.

“Kappa always has events going on that are intended to involve all students,” said Richard Burke, a senior history and political science double major and Kappa Chi’s fall president. “These events vary from KappaChino, KappAssassins, Late Night, serenades, tailgates and bake sales. Homecoming is also a busy time for Kappa, as we look to repeat as Tiger Tunes champions, as well as hosting a cookout after the Friday Tiger Tunes performance that is free to the public.”

The Women of Chi Rho Phi love serving campus and having the opportunity to meet people while hosting different events. One of their goals as a club is to host events that bring a lot of laughter and joy to students such as their Nerd Prom TWIRP night.

“We do many things throughout the year that are enjoyable for all students,” said Megan Archer, a senior elementary education major and Chi Rho Phi fall president. “Chi Rho Phi has a big event that is intended to help out P.A.T.H. or Partners against Trafficking Humans each year. We also participate in tailgating at football games, as well as Tiger Tunes. Our club hosts an annual Bible Bowl game during the Battle of the Ravine Week and we also sell and deliver doughnuts to students during finals week.”

The final two men’s social clubs active this semester are The Men of Eta Alpha Omega and The Men of Sigma Alpha Sigma. The Men of Eta Alpha Omega is a group of men whose letters remind them that their goal as a club is to always “Honor the Alpha and the Omega”. On campus they love to provide outlets of fun for all students.

“Some of our favorite ways to serve campus is through Tiger Tunes and Muggin’,” said Jacob Moreno, a senior dietetics and nutrition major and Eta Alpha Omega fall president. “Muggin’ is our biggest event and it happens after the last Tiger Tunes show on Saturday and we hand out free IBC Root Beer at the Plaza. It’s an awesome event as we celebrate the winner of Tiger Tunes while listening to fun music and hanging out with your friends.”

“Eta is also present at all home football games. We love getting to provide food and games while tailgating and we try our best to hype up the student section because we love supporting the Tigers and making our presence known at OBU athletic events,” Moreno added.

The Men of Sigma Alpha Sigma is a brotherhood that seeks to be built upon diversity and devotion. Sigma Alpha Sigma enjoys participating in events as it allows them to strengthen their brotherhood as well as stay involved with Ouachita lifestyle. “Throughout the year, we are active in Tiger Serve Day, s’mores on campus during homecoming week, OcTOGAfest, providing doughnuts and coffee during Battle of the Ravine and tailgating,” said Ethan Blackmon, a senior accounting major and Sigma Alpha Sigma fall president. “This year is also our second year back at Tiger Tunes. We are excited to share our Tunes experience with the Women of Chi Delta. It’s important to the Men of Sigma Alpha Sigma to be a part of Tiger life in all that we do.”
