On Monday, Feb. 22, Outdoor Rec will be hosting their annual Full Moon Frisbee event. It will be held on the intramural fields from 7-9 p.m.
“The goal is to play ultimate Frisbee, but in the dark,” Shane Seaton, director of Recreational Life said. “We will be playing normal Ultimate rules and using a light up Frisbee and glow stick to see. It changes the game a little because depth perception is thrown off at night, but it is really fun.”
Outdoor Rec is a division of OBU’s Recreational Life.
“The purpose of Outdoor Rec is to get student’s actively experiencing God through his creation,” Seaton said. “Just being outside allows us to see God (Romans 1:20), but by participating in outdoor activities we learn more about ourselves and others we are with.”
The inspiration for Full Moon Frisbee came to Seaton through his past experience at camp.
“I worked full-time at a camp in Texas and when camp wasn’t in session we would often get together with people from town and other camps in the area and play Ultimate Frisbee,” Seaton said. “Sometimes we would play in places that didn’t have lights so we started playing with a light up Frisbee. When I was scheduling events I remembered those times we played and thought students would enjoy it.”
Outdoor Rec sponsors several other events throughout the year as well as offering activities on a regular basis.
“We have the Climbing/Rental Center that is open from 4-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday,” Seaton said. “This is a great place to learn climbing, get in shape, stay in shape, and have fun. I also really like that we have a rental center where students can rent gear for their own outdoor adventures. This allows students to just borrow gear until they know they really like doing something or until they can save up to buy quality gear. That way they don’t buy something for one trip then never use it again or buy something and have it break after one trip.”
Seaton would like to encourage everyone to participate in outdoor activities—both hosted by O.R. and on your own as well.
“Outdoor Rec schedules events for all types of people,” Seaton said. “People with no outdoor experience who are looking to see what it is like [and] for people who have lots of experience and want to learn more or just keep having fun outside. Most of our events cater to both types of people. I hope that people aren’t afraid to come and be a part of one of the OR events. Everyone should come to at least one event that we host during the semester, just to see what they are like. And the other great part about being involved in O.R. is that they don’t even have to come on an event to do it. I encourage students to get out on their own and go for a hike or camp out. Take a picture and tag @obureclife on Instagram when you do it. Email me and tell me what great things Ouachita students are doing outside. Just knowing people are getting outside makes me happy.”
