For Damaris Garcia, junior Christian studies major from Richland, Texas, a gift that the Lord has given to her to use for her ministry is music. And not just any music—rap music.
“My brothers first got me interested,” Garcia said. “They first got interested when Zeke wrote my other brother a song of encouragement but that was also full of theology and biblical references, since my older brother loved secular rap but was also going through a difficult period at the time.”
The brothers eventually realized that this was something that they could do together for the rest of their lives. However, they had no idea that their little sister was watching them.
“They started rapping together when I was in 6th grade, and I wanted to be like them so I would start trying to do what they do,” Garcia said. “They didn’t start taking me seriously, especially since my first rap ever that I wrote was a way to remember my SAT vocabulary words, until after I actually wrote my first song when I was in high school. This song was called ‘This Life is Amazing,’ which overall talked about living life for the Lord, and even when this life was hard and even when we suffer, that through Christ, there is so much to live for in this world.”
The brothers then decided to expand their duo into a trio to include Damaris, and eventually called themselves Major Prophets. Since then, they have only continued to grow. Even with each brother attending college, they all decided to stay together regardless of how far they were from one another.
“This may not be necessarily a calling on my life but it is a strength of mine and I want to glorify God with all of my talents that He has given me,” Garcia said.
When the siblings are all together while at home on break, they love to get together and share and write songs together, and they all have their favorite Christian rappers that they look up to.
“My all time favorite rapper right now is probably Flame, because of how he is so theologically sound through his lyrics and how he portrays them is encouraging and impactful,” Garcia said. “I also really like NF for the same reason, his lyrics are very impactful and are there to encourage believers in their walks with Christ.”
Even though the Garcia siblings may have all different callings, they still love to come together and fellowship with something through rap music. Through this particular worship tactic, they give their all to Him every time they write a song and every time their song is performed.
Major Prophets is releasing their newest album, Life, in May on iTunes, which consists of songs like, Life, Loco, Jesus Reigns, Sold Out, and many more.
