Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Visual Arts invites all OBU students to enter its third annual Juried Student Art Exhibit. The event, presented as a part of Scholars Day 2011, begins on April 27 and will run for two weeks following.
All Ouachita students are eligible and encouraged to enter, and artwork may be executed in any media: 2D, 3D or installation. Awards for first, second and third place as well as honorable mention will be presented in each of three categories including photography, graphic design and studio art in addition to an award for Best in Show.
“Entries may be works created for class or something you have made on your own,” said Donnie Copeland, OBU assistant professor of visual arts, “but all works submitted should have been made while you have been a student at Ouachita.”
Each year, a professional with experience in both art and design is brought in to officiate the judging of the competition. Serving as juror this year is Emily Wood, painter and instructor at the Arkansas Arts Center’s Museum School. Wood, an alum of Ouachita’s studio art program, has been featured in many exhibits including the 53rd Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center, “Translated into Paint” at the South Arkansas Arts Center and “Arkansas Women to Watch 2011,” which is sponsored by the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She has studied at the Art Students League in New York and is scheduled to complete a Master of Arts in painting from the University of Arkansas Little Rock this spring.
Copeland noted that the show is a great opportunity for students to get their work in front of peers and to garner some exposure to judging prior to graduation. Last year’s exhibition had more than 40 entries, with Greta James, a senior studio art major, taking home Best in Show.
The competition is open to all OBU students, regardless of major. The entry deadline is 9 a.m. on Friday, April 8, and artwork can be delivered to Moses-Provine room 205. All entries must be appropriately framed and ready to hang upon delivery. The cost to enter the competition is $5 per entry.
