July 7, 2008

Ouachita Baptist University head baseball coach Chris Moddelmog announced Monday the hiring of Luke Howard.

Howard will assume the role of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Ouachita Baptist. He comes to OBU after a one year stint at Murray State University, a Division I school in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“Luke will bring a lot of energy and excitement to our program. He is a good recruiter and a tireless worker on and off the field.  I look forward to him and his wife Anne joining the OBU baseball family,” Moddelmog said.

Howard began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Springboro High School in Springboro, Ohio.

In 2006-2007, he began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Cincinnati, where he assisted in all aspects of the program.

Last summer, Howard worked camps at Stanford, Clemson and Vanderbilt, allowing him to learn from some of the biggest names in collegiate baseball.

Howard began his playing career at Purdue, where he was a pitcher for three years (2000-03). He appeared in 35 games and started in 11 of those appearances. He also participated on the captains’ table, a group comprised of captains from every team to deal with athletic affairs.

After his junior season, he transferred to Ohio University, sitting out the 2004 season after having “Tommy John” surgery. In 2005, as a Bobcat, Howard appeared in 15 games with eight starts.

During his collegiate career, he also played in the prestigious Valley League and Northwoods League.

During his high school career, Howard earned nine varsity letters as a quarterback on the football team, a shooting guard on the basketball team and a shortstop and pitcher on the baseball team. He was also a captain in all three sports.

Howard earned his Bachelor of Specialized Studies Degree, with areas in marketing, sociology and real estate, from Ohio University in 2006. He is currently pursuing a master’s in human development and leadership from Murray State.

A native of Springboro, Ohio, he is married to the former Anne Brumback of West Chester, Ohio.
