ARKADELPHIA- Ultimately, two innings made all the difference on Sunday, as Arkansas Tech cruised to a 9-2 victory at Rab Rodgers Field, taking a 3-0 series sweep in Gulf South Conference play.
Ouachita (9-14, 0-3 GSC West) gave up five runs in the first inning, then the Wonder Boys (14-10, 3-0 GSC West), scored four more in the third to take a 9-0 lead.
The Tigers jumped on the board with a single run in the fifth inning, as junior Brett Mazmanian provided an RBI single that scored senior Sam McGill to make the score, 9-1.
In the seventh, Ouachita scored its only other run courtesy of an error by the catcher, sending Cass Via in to score to cut the deficit to 9-2.
Freshman starter Davis Ward (0-2) gave up four earned runs on five hits in just 2/3 of an inning of work, while sophomore Travis King gave up four earned runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
After the third inning, Ouachita pitched as well as it has all season long, giving up just one single hit in six innings of relief. Junior Zac Treece deserves the bulk of the credit, going four innings and allowing just one hit, while striking out four. Senior Nick Holtgrieve and junior Kurt Peppenhorst each went an inning and didn’t allow a hit.
McGill finished 2-for-4, with a run scored, while teammates Mazmanian and Via provided a hit and RBi each on the day.
Ouachita returns to action on March 22 in Nashville against Trevecca Nazarene at 2 p.m. on the campus of Belmont University.
