He’s Single…Ladies?

February 13, 2014

For years, I’ve heard about all different types of romantic Valentine’s Day dates that have been amazing. But I’ve never really gotten into all that ooey-gooey sappiness for a day. I personally believe that a boyfriend should show his admiration for his girl every day, in little ways that show her he cares. But, to indulge many on the Signal staff that have continued to insist that I write this, here I am.

For me, a romantic date would consist of a few different components. Now with that being said, here’s a slight caveat: every person is different and his or her idea of a perfect date will vary. However, here are some general points I think guys should remember about Valentine’s Day.

First of all, flowers and chocolate are very cliché. With that being said, you better not forget these guys. Many will say that chocolate and flowers are overrated, but it’s always a safe bet to have them ready at some point in the date. Whether that’s during the dinner (flowers) or after dinner (with chocolate), what is Valentine’s Day without the classics?

Second, what you decide to do is important. Know what the girl likes. If she’s not really big into the whole dinner and a movie scene, do something different. I heard of a couple that walked puppies from the humane society together last Valentine’s Day. Whatever works for you. I know of a guy that is going to take his girlfriend on a picnic at the bluff (by the way guys, sunsets are always a good thing).

Third, make sure to remember that it is her day. Spoil her. Whatever she wants to do, you do. Make her feel like a princess that day. But, don’t be a pushover. Be assertive in what’s going to happen. Remember it’s very easy to lead in the date, but still remain a gentleman, contrary to what popular culture says.

It wouldn’t be right for me to talk about all these qualifications without giving you an idea of what the perfect romantic date would be, by my book. So, without further ado, here it is:

Mid afternoon is the perfect time for an exhilarating bike ride or a scenic hike at DeGray. This would be the first part of the Valentine’s Day date.

Following time to change, we’d head up to Little Rock for early evening dinner reservations at Ashley’s Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Arkansas right now. With a changing menu daily and a world-renowned chef, Joël Antunes, the restaurant is well-known for its friendly and welcoming staff. The tables are spread out and great for an intimate dinner date for two.

One of the greatest things about Little Rock is how close everything is downtown. Following a great dinner at Ashley’s, we’d take a walk down to the riverfront to view the sunset. Little Rock boasts a great skyline for a smaller city and it’s the perfect site to take in at sundown on Valentine’s Day.

Following the walk, there are a few different options we could choose. This is where my date would get to pick. In one respect, some of my favorite times have been with great friends by a bonfire with an acoustic guitar. In contrast, if the weather is warm, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to go stargazing in a field. If the weather is cold, coffee in a quaint intimate bookstore can be very romantic.

In reality, this date is very doable. If only I had a date that would like that. Instead, my date is the new season of “House of Cards” and some pizza. I couldn’t be more excited. Don’t lie-You know you’re jealous that I have the best date on Ouachita’s campus.

Nevertheless, whatever you decide to do, make sure that she feels spoiled. There’s nothing worse than a bad Valentine’s Day date. Even if its as simple as chocolate, flowers and a sappy rom-com, Valentine’s Day is about showing her you care- however you think best to do that.
