Halloween is an entertaining time around Ouachita’s campus as clubs and other organizations create a fun, spooky atmosphere for students. There is smorgasbord of events to choose from to help get students into the spirit, or at least dressed up as one.
On Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., the campus activities office is kicking off the Halloween festivities with a movie night at the Speer Pavilion. They will be presenting Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic “The Birds,” about a town in California which is mysteriously subjected to widespread violent bird attacks. Don’t forget to show up in Halloween style, and be ready to be frightened to the core.
On Thursday, Halloween Day, there will be many events to be a part of.
The caf will be celebrating throughout the day. The staff will be in spooky costumes while serving sweets from candy to caramel apples. There will also be a pumpkin carving contest that anyone can compete in, and the Halloween dinner will include a baked potato bar and “bloody” steaks.
“This meal will be served buffet style,” said Jon Fitzgerald, general manager of Ouachita’s dining services. “The steaks will be grilled outside so that everyone can smell them cooking.”
The women of Francis-Crawford will also be celebrating Halloween with a kids door-to-door trick-or-treat event Thursday from 6-7 p.m.
“Sometimes when we come to college, we miss out on the traditions we grew up with, such as trick-or-treating,” said Allison Sweatman, Francis-Crawford West hall director. “I’m a firm believer in getting us back into the joy and fun of the holidays well into adulthood, and it all starts with Halloween.”
The trick-or-treating is open to the children of Ouachita faculty and staff or Big Brother/Big Sister participants. They will be able to go through the hallways and knock on dorm doors to get candy and meet some Ouachita students.
“This is just a really great opportunity to connect our residents with people from off-campus,” Sweatman said. “It’s an easy way to offer service and joy from within our little residence hall.”
It’s said the best events and food on campus surround holidays, and Halloween will be no exception to that goal.
