End-of-the-Semester Advice for Students

December 3, 2012

Start organizing your notes and preparing to study now!    Try to keep a regular sleep pattern.  Sleep deprivation hurts you more than most people realize.

— Dr. Tim Knight

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for The Lord, not for men.” As the fall semester comes to an end, you may need to use this verse as a motivation and reminder to attend all of your remaining classes on time and to study for those final exams. Good luck!

— Ms. Rachel Pool

Perfection is a noble goal but an unrealistic expectation. Do your best. Get some sleep. Do it again tomorrow.

— Dr. Randall Wight

I encourage students to finish strong! You will never regret it.

— Dr. Barbara Pemberton

Be patient with yourself, your peers and your professors. If you’re not sure or think you need more info, don’t wait — ask now. Finals are not really final — the impact of your studies this semester will continue throughout your life.

— Dr. Rob Hewell

Hello difference makers. Central to your journey of leadership and service is a great education. Each semester is a building block enabling you to take one more step toward the goal. Stay strong!

— Dr. Rex Horne

Sometimes it is overwhelming to look at everything that has to be done between now and the end of the semester.  Don’t let that keep you from moving forward.  Look at what needs to be accomplished for today or tomorrow and do it.  Take things one step a time-one task at a time.

— Mrs. Susan Atkinson

Sleep, focus, and enjoy. “All-nighters” have become something of a badge of honor, but rarely are these badges of honor accompanied by top grades. For our brains to focus, they must be rested. I’m amazed at how many students miss crucial points on final exams simply because they did not read the questions carefully. The knowledge was there, but the focus was lacking. And finally, enjoy! Enjoy the challenge of the exams; enjoy the last few days spent with friends during the semester; and enjoy this season which causes so many to focus on things that matter most.

— Dr. Bryan McKinney

I strongly suggest that students get plenty of sleep and eat healthy foods prior to taking their final exams.  In addition, I encourage students to prepare strategically for their exams.  This entails going into each exam knowing exactly the final exam grade necessary to achieve the overall grade desired.  Allocate the time and energy you spend preparing in a balanced fashion, but one that focuses attention on those courses where you have the best chance of it making a real difference for your final grade.

— Dr. Hal Bass

Whether this constitutes “wisdom” is someone else’s judgment to make, I suppose, but I have come to learn that the essence of “the good life” lies in the meaningful relationships that we build with other people and the stories that we are able to tell.  We therefore live richly when we try to accumulate as many of both as we possibly can.

— Dr. Kevin Motl

As my father always said to me, what his father said to him; those timeless, sage words of wisdom: “Come home carrying your shield, or carried on it.” Essentially “win or die trying.” It’s a Eurich family tradition, and I’ve heard it before every finals week of my career, from my first year of college to this day.

— Ms. Tiffany Eurich

Students (and professors!) can sometimes feel overwhelmed with the multitude of tasks and activities on the calendar. Sometimes you need to take time to organize and prioritize so that you take everything one step at a time. It is also important to take time to enjoy the season and the fellowship of friends.

— Dr. Deborah Root

If we had some ham, we could have ham and eggs, if we had some eggs. Think about it.

— Dr. Jeff Root
