Eight OBU band members to perform with Arkansas Intercollegiate Band

January 29, 2009

Eight members of Ouachita Baptist University’s band have been selected to perform with the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band.

A total of 100 student musicians from 14 universities across the state were selected for the honor. The band will perform at the Arkansas Music Educators Association meeting in Hot Springs in February.

The Ouachita students named to this year’s Arkansas Intercollegiate Band are: Brooke Baker of Swansea, Ill., clarinet; Kelsey Bates of Marion, Ark., horn; Matthew Gudino of Little Rock, trumpet; Alissa Hill of Bella Vista, Ark., alto saxophone; Kate Hughes of Fort Worth, Texas, percussion; Cameron Jones of Fort Worth, Texas, bass trombone; Leah Jones of Burkburnett, Texas, horn; and Rebecca Seago of Worland, Wyo., oboe.

The students are selected for this event by recommendation of their band directors. Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s director of bands and music education chair, noted that “the students who are chosen to perform in the band are a representation of the best college wind and percussion musicians from the state of Arkansas.”

Each year, the students play selections chosen by the AIB clinician. This year’s clinician is Frank Wickes, director of bands at Louisiana State University.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to play in this band last year and am looking forward to it again,” said Rebecca Seago. “It is a good opportunity to play more great band music on top of what we play here in wind ensemble every year and to meet some other musicians from other colleges and universities within the state.”
