Departments of theatre and music will present “Pirates of Penzance”

November 13, 2008

Opening Nov. 20 and running until Nov. 23, “The Pirates of Penzance” will will be showing on the stage of JPAC.

The opera is about a young man named Frederic who just turned 21 and has officially become a pirate. He turns the offer down to find a woman to fall in love with.

For a little more than a month now, the cast has been putting together the show that will be performed in less than two weeks.

“We had some rough spots in the last several weeks to be completely honest,” said cast member Matt Landers. “But we’ve been working pretty hard lately and we definitely have a good show shaping up.”

Unlike many operas, “Pirates of Penzance” is not made up of slow-paced solos. The show will be full of pirates singing and dancing.

“The thing that makes it unique is how lively all of the music is,” Landers said.

Besides the musical aspect, the show is filled with dance routines, making it a bit different than most operas that have been shown on campus the past few years.

“I love the pirate choreography,” Landers said. “Melody Taylor and Kyle Huey have done good work putting some things together on stage. The Pirates are hysterical. I won’t say anything and ruin it, but I’ve loved watching the guys get into character lately.”

The cast and crew have been giving a lot of time and effort to the opera.

“It takes tons of time. It takes rehearsals every night of the week and lots of out of rehearsal preparation: memorizing lines, getting costumes and props, building sets,” said cast member Jacob Watson. “We all believe it is a lot of time very well spent. We all love it even though it is extremely time consuming. It’s the life we’ve chosen.”

“Pirates of Penzance” will show at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20-22, and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 23 in JPAC.
