Club History Series: Sigma Alpha Sigma

April 6, 2017

Sigma Alpha Sigma is a men’s social club that has been around since the beginning of social clubs here at OBU. Founded in 1932, the men of Sigma Alpha Sigma are involved in various segments of campus, ranging from ROTC to the swim team.

This club is smaller than most, but because of this, they are closer as a club. Jonathan Duncan, a junior business management entrepreneurship major from Marion, Ark. said, “S has always chosen to be a smaller club. We are a solid group of guys who are on the same page and [are] very close knit. A lot of that is attributed to our numbers.”

Even though Sigma is small, it is also very diverse.

“Diversity I love. We have some swimmers, we have some tennis players, we have some music people, we got Bible people. It’s a small club, but it’s so diverse; literally being an S is the only thing that we have in common,” Duncan said.

The alumni presence is also very strong for Sigma.

“We have a very large group of alumni that love the club so much that they are still contributing. They are still helping and mentoring with the members,” Duncan said.

Sigma has some big plans for this next year.

“Even though we are a small club, we are going to push and try and have a presence on campus. And we are going to try and do things that everyone can be a part of. We are making traditions, we’ve been doing the smores at Battle of the Ravine every year, and we have brought back S night live; we did that last semester and will do it again. Those are the two real traditions; we’ve been feeling out what we are wanting to do,” Duncan said.

As far as Tunes goes, you can expect to see Sigma back in the lineup. After Snails with Chi Delta in 2015, Sigma took a year off of Tunes. Tyler Sanders, a sophomore music industry major from Arkadelphia, is the Tunes director for the 2017 Tunes show.

“I think it was a good break, as far as size goes. I think we just outright voted not to do it last semester. …But as this semester goes, yes, I do think we are doing Tunes. As far as being Tunes director, I am trying to change the way that S has done it in the past. This year we are doing it with Chi Rho Phi, and my intention is to try and create a show that is slightly different than what people have seen before,” Sanders said.

Although Sigma is small, students can expect to see a lot more events being thrown by Sigma, and a new Tunes show that will be paired with Chi Rho Phi. Campus is full of social clubs, and Sigma Alpha Sigma has been here since the beginning.
