Lady Rams shutout Ouachita in women’s soccer opener

September 7, 2010

FORT WORTH, Texas- After neither team scored in the second half, it was Texas Wesleyan’s Kayla Mason who added a pair of corner kick goals after the break to put away the 2-0 victory against Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference women’s soccer match in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday.

Mason broke the game open at the 47:08 mark, while also closing the scoring at 85:24. Teammates Christina Zimmerman and Jodi Blowers provided the assists to Mason.

“The ladies did really well today, although I wish the result was better,” Ouachita Head Coach Alex Denning said. “Our starting point this year is so much stronger than where we have been, and playing a quality team like this to start out helps us to see our holes.”

The Lady Tigers recorded eight shots overall as a team, compared to 14 by Texas Wesleyan. Ouachita senior Whitley Hoppe played all 90 minutes at goalkeeper, recording eight saves. The Lady Rams held the edge in corner kicks with four in front of a crowd of 300 on a sunny afternoon in East Texas. Ouachita junior Beth Wendl, sophomore Sarah McKimmey and freshman Morgan Pitchford each provided a shot on goal for the Lady Tigers.

“Last year we lost to them 6-2 so the advances we are making on the field are evident and I’m so glad with the quality players we have,” Denning said. “We will fix a couple issues we had defensively today and work in connecting the offense and I believe we are up for a successful season.”

Ouachita Baptist returns to the field on Monday, Sept. 6 against Palm Beach Atlantic for a non-conference matchup beginning at 10 a.m. in Arkadelphia at the Ouachita soccer field.
