ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—Ouachita Baptist University studio art majors Elizabeth Baker and Mitsuko Humble will combine forces to present their senior art exhibit April 26 through May 6 in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s Hammons Gallery on Ouachita’s campus. The exhibit will also feature work by senior art minors Kara Humble and Gabrielle Sanders. A closing reception will be held in the gallery May 3 at 5 p.m.
Student art exhibits are a way for Ouachita students to share their artwork with the public in a culmination of their program of study.
“To see the work that you have created, dressed up and hung in a carefully organized exhibition changes the way an artist sees and appreciates his or her own efforts,” said Donnie Copeland, OBU assistant professor of visual arts.
The exhibit gives each student artist the opportunity to express her point of view.
“The theme of my gallery is all things from my imagination,” said Baker, a Piggott, Ark., native. “I find a lot of fascination in creating worlds, creatures and cultures—in essence, in creating stories.”
Mitsuko Humble, a student from Shizuoka, Japan, said she will be taking a darker approach with her exhibit, drawing inspiration from the styles of Tim Burton and Star Wars. Her pieces are primarily “about conflict,” she explained. “How we know what is good and what is bad, yet we still struggle with making decisions and choosing sides in our lives—especially in our spiritual lives.”
Expressing his high expectations for the exhibit, Copeland said, “Both students are talented artists equipped with great ability and imagination.”
Selections by senior art minors Kara Humble and Gabrielle Sanders will also be featured as part of the exhibit. Humble is a mass communications major from Brinkley, Ark., and Sanders is a psychology major from Broken Arrow, Okla.
