Several years ago a student newsletter was produced by Student Senate for the campus community. While the reasons why the newsletter was discontinued are unknown, Senate President Jeff Garner has called upon the organization to revive the newsletter as a way of communicating with the student body.
“I guess they just decided to stop running it,” said Lindsey Wright, chair of the public relations committee. “Probably due to a lack of interest, cost or to lesson their workload.”
Wright added, “Jeff Garner, our president, found a copy of an old newsletter and thought it would be great to have one this year.”
“Student Senate is bringing back the newsletter because we want our fellow students here at Ouachita to be informed of things going on around campus,” said Joy Livers, a graphic design major who is planning the newsletter. “We want to let students know that we care and are interested in their lives. I think that the idea of getting the newsletter started again was really up to Jeff Garner, who is our Student Senate president this year. I know that he wanted to change some of what Senate does, and I have found him to be very passionate for his job as president.”
“We want to increase the visibility of Student Senate on campus. We were elected to represent the students. This newsletter will inform them of what Senate does on a weekly basis, as well as let them know how they can contact the Senate,” said Wright. “I think it will give students a better chance to be involved on campus. By understanding the function of Student Senate, students will be able to take advantage of the services we offer.”
When asked what sort of work would go into the getting the news letter together, Wright responded, “Lots of time in the Mac Lab compiling stories and calendars.”
Livers described an idea of what the newsletter will include.
“The first newsletter had a piece which talked about what Student Senate is and what we do, and why I personally decided [and] wanted to be on student senate in the first place” said Livers. “There was also a piece that Jeff Garner wrote that was about what he expected of Senate this year. We are also going to have professors of the semester where we vote on a professor that we think has done a great job and possibly needs some recognition. We also have in the newsletter a calendar of events going on around campus.”
