1:00 Katie Simmons Laney, “More Than Just Books: Using Fiction to Help Young Girls Relate”
Faculty Director: Amy Sonheim
Abstract: Bibliotherapy, the therapeutic use of fiction to help persons cope, offers an innovative, effective means for counseling, especially with young girls. This thesis provides an overview of bibliotherapy: what it is, how it works, who practices it, and how effective it could be in ministry to young girls troubled by relational aggression.
1:30 Abby Kauffman Brumley, “Achieving Emmetropia through Astigmatic Keratotomy”
Faculty Director: Marty Perry
Abstract: An estimated 1 in 6 people have a degree of the debilitating eye disorder known as astigmatism. A condition typically developed between the ages of birth and four years old, corneal astigmatism is caused by irregular development of the cornea and results in blurred near and far vision. Although the condition is typically treated with the use of either glasses or contacts, astigmatism can possibly be lessened or eliminated by the latest breakthrough in cataract surgery – astigmatic keratotomy.

Abstract: My Omi’s candid interview reveals her life in Europe to her prosperity in the United States. Growing up in a small town in Poland, Edith Terlecki lived an ordinary life until Hitler occupied Poland. Being of German descent, Edith at first benefited from Hitler’s power. However, after Hitler started losing territory to the Russians, Edith found herself in Berlin, separated from her family, trying to survive. When the reunited family found itself later under Soviet occupation, Edith’s father masterminded an escape.
2:30 Molly Throgmorton, “House of Leaves: Navigating the Labyrinth of the Deconstructed Novel”

Abstract: Mark Danielewski’s labyrinthine House of Leaves is a massive novel that, like the house it describes, is bigger on the inside than the outside. My research explores how Danielewski’s novel deconstructs the reader’s understanding of how a novel should look, act, and be read.

Abstract: This thesis looks at the history of whaling, specifically in the Antarctic region, and current issues related to the industry.
3:30 Kristin Cordell, “Piano Performance Injuries and Preventions”
Faculty Director: George Keck
Abstract: This thesis provides information on how to detect and determine possible injuries pianists encounter during practice or performance. The upper extremity of the body involved in playing the piano will be defined and discussed along with an overview of how and why injuries occur. Possible treatments and prevention techniques for such injuries will be examined.
4:00 Kenley Singleton, “Connecting the Dots: Coupling Quantum Dots with Water-Soluble Porphyrins”
Faculty Director: Joe Bradshaw
Abstract: This research documents advances being made in the area of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using porphyrin molecules. Porphyrins are better suited for PDT than their organic dye predecessors. Currently, Photofrin and Visudyne, both porphyrin-type derivatives are used in PDT. However, the fluorescence and longevity advantages could possibly be further improved by the successful coupling of the porphyrin molecule to nanoparticles known as quantum dots.

Abstract: For centuries, society has debated censorship, banning books due to the beliefs of the times. Twenty-first-century society continues to debate the issue of free speech versus book censorship, predominately regarding what is taught in the classroom. How does this debate affect Ouachita Baptist University? How does one discern between valuing literature as art and staying true to one’s faith?
5:00 Valerie Martinka, “Spectrum of Understanding”

Abstract: The Theatre of the Oppressed movement, started by Augusto Boal to free individuals and communities from social injustice, has begun to permeate the field of mental health. Comparing Boal’s work to other forms of theater used for therapy, I give both an overview and an analysis of the effectiveness of various organizations’ use of the Theatre of the Oppressed to work with individuals suffering from mental illness.
5:30 Marcie Bealer, “Then & Now: Discovering the Relevance of Tennessee Williams for the 21st Century Actress”

Abstract: To analyze if Williams’ female roles are relevant for actresses now, I will situate his plays in their historical context, review the original performances of actresses who shaped the roles, and conclude with recent responses from actresses performing the roles now.

Abstract: Last year, we presented the results of a survey concerning protestant work ethic. This year we present results from further analysis of those and additional surveys.
6:30 Will Darr, “Into the Hands of Christian Princes”
Faculty Director: Terry Carter
Abstract: From the apostolic age to the time of Augustan, this research traces the development of the relationship between the early church and the government, examining the Church Fathers’ views in regard to their duties both as subjects and in places of authority.

Abstract: In Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov commits two murders and a robbery, whereupon he is convicted and sentenced to eight years in Siberia. Having thoroughly researched the novel, students will stage a mock trial, arguing for and against the justice of the sentence.
