Nearing the end: Golf team heads to conference tournament

April 15, 2009

With only one tournament to go, the Ouachita golf team has high hopes of finishing strong. The Gulf South Conference tournament is April 20-21.

“We know the course that we play for conference really well,” said senior Blake Sisson, “so that should help us to play our best.”

Their work done earlier this year is a boost of confidence at this point in the season.

“I do feel like we have become more of a solid team this semester,” said senior Klayton Seyler, “which is a comforting feeling when you step out on the course.”

The season has not been easy for the team.“We have had some tough winds so far this semester, but we have managed to get through it,” Sisson said. “We’re hoping for some good weather during the conference tournament, and hopefully we can capitalize on it.”

“Each tournament seems to progress in difficulty and challenges us in new ways,” Seyler said.

These two seniors said this year’s team showed promise from the beginning.

“We have a lot of experience this year on our team,” Sisson said. “We have all been playing competitive golf for a really long time, and we know how to handle pressure situations.”

“The team this year is totally different from the team I entered into freshman year,” Seyler said. “We all have . . . realized how important it is to stand out amongst the field of college golfers.”

Seyler said this is his most enjoyable year, by far.

“Each one of us seems to encourage one another on the course this year,” Seyler said. “I think it’s a quality thing when you see a team of college athletes strive towards solid integrity on and off the course.”

The team finished second in the SAU Invitational April 6-7.

They were down by two strokes to Henderson going into the second day of the tournament.

The team fired a 305 the first day while Henderson recorded a 303, and tied on the second day with a team total of 302 to finish two strokes back.

Sophomore Cole Fisher led the team by shooting a two-day total of 150. Sisson and Rob Greer both shot two-day totals of 152. Seyler finished with a 154. Dax Demaree rounded out the team with a 157.

“We’re hoping to come out and finish off the year really well this semester,” Sisson said. “It’s a couple of our last college golf tournaments this year at conference, and we’re trying to finish off the college golf career in a good way.”
