Ouachita Baptist University will hold Tiger Serve Day on Saturday, Sept. 27. Tiger Serve Day (TSD) is a semiannual event for the Ouachita community to serve the greater Arkadelphia community, fulfilling OBU’s Christian mission and dedication to service.
Each semester, an average of 500 Ouachitonians volunteer as a part of Tiger Serve Day. Last spring, 583 people worked a total of nearly 1460 hours to help the community by completing projects ranging from painting and general clean up and repairs to insulating heaters for energy efficiency and planting trees for a city beautification project.
“It is a very polished event,” said Dr. Ian Cosh, assistant to the president for community development and director of the Ben M. Elrod Center for Family and Community. “We have some strong systems in place to make sure that we coordinate things closely.”
To organize the campaign, the Elrod Center assembles a student leadership team of about 20 workers who plan, organize and execute the event. Each semester, the Elrod Center places a request for projects in the local newspaper, and the student leadership team gathers project requests from people who have participated in past years.
“Tiger Serve Day is one of my favorite times each semester,” said Cami Jones, a senior Spanish and early childhood education major from Mansfield, Texas, who is a member of the TSD leadership team. “It brings not only the OBU family together, but the whole Arkadelphia community for one purpose: service.”
