Dr. Jack’s was a little more lively than usual on Wednesday night as students showcased their musical talents. Everyone at Ouachita appreciates the talent that is on campus, and Wednesday night was just a glimpse of what some of Ouachita’s students can do. Friends and professors came out in full force to support their peers on stage.

The night began at eight o’clock as Alec Edmonds and Michaela Finley, with Houston Clifton on the guitar, were the brave freshmen to take the stage first. They blew the crowd away with their harmonies.

“Everyone being so close, and the fact that most of your friends are in the audience,” is what makes the coffeehouse unique in Finley’s opinion. “And a little more intimidating.”

Other performances were made by freshman Nick Quinn and sophomore Madi Polk, who wowed the audience with their rendition of “Hallelujah,” and juniors Will Stotts and Alexis Morgan, with freshman Beaux Schmidt on the guitar. Stotts and Morgan added a little country flair to the evening, and then won the crowd over with their cover of Meghan Trainor’s “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.”

Freshman Austin Sowerbutts and younger brother Stuart, accompanied by junior Ben Patterson and sophomore Kevin Barnard, stole the hearts of every girl when they took the stage and sang Ben Rector’s “Forever Like That.”

“It was interesting for me, because this was my first time doing non-congregation music. It was cool to get reactions from the audience,” Sowerbutts said.

The night ended on an upbeat note as Clifton and Schmidt showed off their guitar skills, which resulted in an eruption of applause from the audience.

Friends and classmates alike packed in as tightly as they could, filling every couch, chair, booth and most of the floor space at Dr. Jack’s. Some came because it was a roommate or close friend playing. Others came out to support a friend they made through their social club, and some came out just to enjoy the coffee and good music. Whatever the reason that got them there, students got to take some time out of their busy schedule to hang out together and enjoy each other’s company, and that is what the coffeehouse is all about.
