Ouachita Baptist University will host the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet in concert on Monday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
The performance will be a multimedia concert with projections of art and video accompanying the music. The quartet created the program after being invited to perform at the Conway Arts Fest.
“This would be a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience an interdisciplinary performance exploring the juxtaposition of art, music and ‘The Jerry Springer Show,’” said Dr. Caroline Taylor, OBU professor of music. She also plays alto saxophone with the quartet
Other members of the quartet include Dr. Brent Bristow, director of bands and professor of saxophone at Arkansas State University at Beebe, on tenor saxophone; Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of music at the University of Central Arkansas, on baritone saxophone; and Dr. Andy Wen, associate professor of music at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, on soprano saxophone.
The program will include “Quartette” by Caryl Florio, “The Modern Art Suite” by Rusty Dedrick, “Line Drawings After Works by Mark Tobey (1978)” by Samuel Adler and “Heartbreakers” by Jacob Ter Veldhuis.
The Arkansas Saxophone Quartet was formed in 2007 and has performed throughout the U.S. They performed at the World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland, last year and will perform at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Illinois in March 2014. The group performs all styles of chamber music from transcriptions to avant-garde contemporary music.
