90s Glory Days: Missing Go-Gurt Tubes, Decent TV Shows, Furby

Anna Kumpuris“Back in my day…”

Thinking that makes me feel kind of old, but maybe we’re just at that point now, because I find myself thinking phrases like that more and more often. “Back in my day…” “Remember when we used to have…” “Kids these days…”

But really, I’d say that back in our day, the days of our child- hood, we had it pretty great.

I feel sorry for today’s batch of kids. They really don’t know what they’re missing, and if I had it my way, I would show them. Here is my list of the top five trends from our childhood that I wish would make a comeback:

5. Decent TV shows. Just when I think it can’t get any worse, I spend time with my little brother or some kids I babysit and realize that the shows they’re watching just keep getting more stupid. Remember the days of “Even Stevens,” “Rugrats” and “Rocket Power?” How blessed we were with quality childhood television. Now the top TV shows for kids include “Dog with a Blog,” a show about a talking dog who writes his own blog. I’d say the writers at Disney Channel have hit an all-time low.

4. Go-Gurt. Great tasting yogurt without the hassle of carrying around a spoon! What more could you want out of life? If Go- Gurt ever did make a big comeback though, I would request that they start making Greek Go-Gurt. That would be the ultimate yogurt-eating experience.

3. N*Sync. I will always maintain that Justin Timberlake was at his prime as the front man of N*Sync. You can’t get much better than “Dirty Pop.” Meanwhile, the Backstreet Boys keep try-ing ― and mostly failing ― to make a comeback. Call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure if N*Sync got back together they would be an insta-hit once again.

2. Furby. Who doesn’t want a small, furry, ambiguous creature with enormous eyes to sit on your dresser and stare at you? They had big Furbies, small Furbies, talking Furbies. I had a lot of toys when I was a kid, but Furby will always hold a special place in my heart.

1. Heelys. The sneakers with wheels built into the heel. You could roller skate anywhere, anytime. You could heely down the sidewalk while drinking your Go-gurt. That was life. Today’s poor kids just walk everywhere, if they even go anywhere at all since they’re typically just inside watching terrible TV shows or playing on their iPhones.

Yep, life was sweet back in the day. Sure, there are a few trends from our childhood that are gone and should probably stay gone—Crocs, choker necklaces, crop tops (oh wait…) but overall the world would be a better place if we just pulled our inspiration from the culture of the early 2000s.
